A gym goer’s queries to Corona virus – answered by a doctor & gym owner

Enough of Corona scare. Being a gym owner as well as a doctor I have already seen the pain, death, fear and rumour of Covid 19.

Time has come for the fitness enthusiasts to know the truth and ignore the scare. Let us discuss it in a question-answer format :

Q. Should we be afraid of Corona virus?

middle-img

Ans. Of course, in this situation. But be afraid of the novel or genetically modified Covid 19 strain. The age old Corona virus is just another common cold / rhinovirus type of virus. But this one is a different story altogether.

Q. Is it extremely life threatening?

Ans. No. It’s mortality rate is hardly 2 – 4% and that too mostly for the elderly people (over 60 and almost fatal over 80 and the immuno – compromised (like diabetes, cancer chemo patients, patients on steroids, bypass surgery, extreme debility etc.) It is significantly less severe than 2003 SARS (mortality rate -10%) or 2012 MERS (MR: 35%) outbreaks or even Ebola virus.

Risk of death is higher in older people. We should be extremely careful about protecting them.

Q. Can I die from Corona virus infection?

Ans. No. Almost 80% of people have mild

symptoms, and recover from the disease in 2 weeks. Most of the symptoms can be treated. But the disease is dangerous because if you are infected and still recover soon, you can spread it to several people around you if not isolated

Q. OMG, how can I understand whether I have Corona virus infection?

Ans. You cannot self diagnose. Features overlap with flu and cold & cough. Fever with cough, sneeze leading to pneumonia, respiratory and kidney failure. The severely infected patients may go to ventilation and even die. As per AIIMS these are found in Indian Corona virus infection:

“The clinical and radiological manifestations of 2019-nCoV include:

  • Fever (83%)
  • Cough (82%)
  • Shortness of breath (31%)
  • Sore throat (5%)
  • Rhinorrhoea (4%)
  • Diarrhea (2%)
  • Bilateral pneumonia on imaging (75%)
  • ARDS (10-17% of admitted patients)”

Q. Can it be confirmed in any lab test?

Ans. Yes it can be confirmed by lab testing. Throat swab sample can be tested by real time PCR test for Covid 19 but it’s not available everywhere. Till now, only a few Govt. accredited labs are able to test it. The numbers are increasing.

Q. Any treatment or vaccine for Corona?

Ans. As of now treatment is like most other viral diseases, ie symptomatic and antivirals in a few (like chicken pox, herpes, HIV, etc.). As per recent research, anti retroviral drugs Lopinavir and Rotonavir and Chloroquine (used in malaria) as well as zinc has shown good response. But if symptoms get severe, even ventilation and ICU treatment may be required.

Q. How can we prevent it?

Ans. This is the most important lesson to be kept in mind. Memorize this :

C – Clean Your Hands 🖐 – wash with soap water for 20 seconds and use hand sanitizer (>60% alcohol is a must)

O- Off From Gatherings 🏃– Social distancing is a must. Avoid gatherings and keep at least 1 metre distance from others.

R- Raise Your Immunity 😇 – Do regular exercise and eat healthy fruits and vegetables with good, immunity boosting micronutrients

O- Only Sick to Wear Mask 😷 – The N95 got famous suddenly. But mask is required if you are sick or treating sick/high risk people.

N – No to Hand Shake 👏 – Try “namaste” instead of handshake. The videos of political big shots doing Namaste, have been viral.

A- Avoid Rumours 🚫 – This is very common in social media and we, the Indians, love spreading it. Remember, the extremely scare has been caused by mainstream media as well as social media. We need to be aware of the true factss only and shre that only.

P. S. – Share this blog as this is based on only true facts.

Q. Ok but how does it spread so fast?

Ans. It spreads through eye, nose, and mouth, via

droplets produced on coughing or sneezing and close contact with infected person, contaminated surfaces, objects, or items of personal use.

Coughing and sneezing can do it as well as touch. Just try to control these. But remember, it doesn’t spread with food like chicken or egg. It’s not a bird flu!

But it loves cold temperatures to survive and spread easily. 4°C or 39.2°C, certain versions of the coronavirus could remain viable for up to 28 days. At temperatures of 30–40°C (86–104°F), coronaviruses tended to persist for a shorter time (within 48 hours).

Also remember, surface disinfection with 0.1% sodium hypochlorite or 62–71% ethanol significantly reduces coronavirus infectivity on surfaces within 1 min exposure time.

Q. Now coming to the point, should I go to gym?

Ans. You can but with restrictions. I have already described how r𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗯𝗶𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗶𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗮.

You can do the following to take precautions against Corona :

  1. Use the hand sanitizer (a bottle can benkept at reception and floor).

  1. Wash your hands (lots of free flowing water).

  1. Use your own towel and mask.

  1. Skip the gym if you feel cold, cough and fever symptoms.

Q. Great. But will you suggest something for the gym owners to do to prevent Corona spread?

Ans. Yes they can easily do the following…

  • Try to avoid more than 10 members in gym floor.
  • Keep lots of hand sanitizers in locker room, reception, wash room and floors.
  • Ask gym members to wash hands and use hand sanitizer religiously.
  • Avoid group fitness classes.
  • Cleanse the gym equipments and floors with disinfectants and sprays.
  • Try to keep distance between members in the workout area.
  • Do thermal screening for the members if they have any symptoms of cold, cough, fever etc.
  • Give lots of tissues to members. Ask members to catch cough in tissues (or even inside the elbow) and dispose them off.

Q. But several gyms are shutting down in various towns and cities. Is it a solution to this crisis?

Ans. See the Corona issue is a pandemic and people are desperate to break the wave. For that it gyms can be shut. But it’s a very small part of the chain.

The social gatherings are much more in buses, local trains, shopping malls, banks, parties, public gatherings etc. Govt. of various states are slowly closing these down.

A complete lockdown can be the best option to completely check the spread of the virus (as done in Wuhan, China, the epicenter of novel Corona outbreak). Gyms can be a part of that.

Q. So what should we do, stop doing exercises?

Ans. Not at all. Do your exercise at home. Use body weight, elastic bands or even home gym like me. Read my blog on how to build a home gym

Consider the better sides of being at home. Enjoy a bit of holiday and spend quality time with your family members.

Above all, a few days ago gym layoff won’t wear off your muscles.

Q. How long will this Corona virus fiasco continue?

Ans. As I mentioned earlier, it will find difficulties in spreading in warm temperatures. They won’t survive the hot Indian summer and your gym will open up by that time. So cheer up.
