Mental blocks in weight loss and dieting

written by Dr. Basudev Tewari |     May 27, 2018

In this post we shall discuss the various psychological aspects in our quest for weight loss. The mental block in weight loss is a serious issue and unless you overcome it there is no point having great diet charts or workout programs.

Let me share with you my experience as a pediatrician, for a decade. Babies and children have much more capacity to grasp and learn. Basically they have nothing to un-learn. Imagine how much a child learns even before going to the school within 4 to 5 years.

We the adults are different. We take much longer time to both learn and unlearn. There lies the crux of the problem. Let us consider the points one by one…

Wrong belief with fat gain:

You simply refuse to accept a fact as another belief has been ingrained in your mind. Suppose you have more than 30% body fat. In third world countries people may call you ‘healthy’. This is not even uncommon in western world too.

In fact after my own transformation over more than a year, people meeting me in my office or clinic commented strangely several times. They told me things like – “Doctor, you had been so ‘healthy’ over years, now you look so frail and thin. Are you on any diet? Or, have you developed diabetes or any other disease?

In a country where most people are undernourished or malnourished, being fat seems like something to be proud of! Even those people with big midsection, (more common in rural and semi urban areas) , are seen here and there, flaunting their pot belly to others instead if hiding them. Even our mom and grandma hate the idea of balanced diet and exercise to get leaner and fitter. They consider it as deterioration of health.

Once you have belly fat and have a lordotic posture, people around you starts believing that you are well off now. You are earning and supporting a family. You, thus have the right to flaunt your damned tummy. (God save us from this tummy apocalypse)

Pardon me if I am too aggressive here but these are the bare facts. 21st century has given us lots of technologies, money, enjoyment and a more comfortable and lethargic life. But it has also given us a hell lot of adipose tissues storing tons of fat. These have the potential to make you suffer in later life and give lots of lifestyle diseases in future. If you need to live better,  you have to get lean and fit. There is no other way round.

Stop believing gaining weight as a symbol of social and financial status.  Fat is bad, you simply need to get rid of it to stay healthy and fit. Get rid of this mental block to lose weight as early as possible and lead a better life.

Inertia or lethargy:

This is something we all face in our life from time to time. The inertia is the single most important factor that keeps people from doing something better in life. Suppose you have all the knowledge in the world about the benefits of exercise. You know how important weight training is and have access to gym and enough time and money. But still you don’t feel like doing it.

True motivation is needed to break the shackles. But people love to flip Facebook and Instagram pages in their mobiles, flip the pages of newspapers, watch a match or soap in TV rather than sweating it out in a gym or outdoors. But if I ask them the reason, they always have the ‘lack of time’ excuse ready in their mouths as an answer to that.

It is all about your priorities. Workouts and substance abuse (causing addiction) can give you the kick. Even the sugary foods and sweets act by the same dopamine rich pathway to give pleasure in your limbic part of your brain. But it is all about which choice you make, despite knowing everything. It is all about getting rid of the mental block of the inertia, that is stopping you from losing weight and be fitter. You have to decide whether you need to sweat it out at gym or on your treadmill, or waste time sitting on your couch, watching TV and eating a pack of French fries (a deadly combo, really). If you think you do not have time to do it, JUST MAKE TIME FOR THAT. YOU HAVE ONLY ONES BODY TO LIVE  IN.

Denial:

This is a very common experience we are facing with the clients in our experience at GetIndiafit. Suppose a great carb restricted diet and exercise plan is given to a client. Instead of diving in, he/she simply refuses to oblige. The following are his/her excuses:

  • “How can I survive without rice or bread in my diet!
  • “Saying buy to sugar in my cup of tea or coffee! Are you nuts?”.
  • “I am a chubby sweet girl, those iron and gyms are not for me. I don’t want to lose my skin glamor!”.
  • “I am a busy working person with a family, I can’t afford time to work out. Just give me a good diet chart.”
  • “I have no disease, why should I have so many damned investigations before getting a diet chart? I don’t need these shit”
  • “I am not fat, just have a little pot belly. I simply want to lose that tummy, that’s all”
  • “I have seen people doing heavy gym exercises, getting great guns and swell to a bigger fatty guy. I never want to touch the barbell. Just tell me the diet.”

and the list goes on an on…

These are extremely common excuses and reactions. People simply go to denial mode, “I can’t do it, tell me an alternate way”. Just think of one fact, do you have an alternate life if you have a problem with this one?

Health and fitness is one of the major reasons of financial destruction of mankind now a days. Ask any health insurance company and you know. You can check the rate of ICU stay for a week in a good hospital of your city. The way people have suffered and drained their lifetime saving, can shock you. As a doctor I can assure you that being healthy is much less costly than being sick in monetary arithmetic.

The only way to avoid it  to get rid of mental block of denial and start proper diet and exercise for weight loss in a scientific way.

Ego problem:

This is perhaps the biggest enemy that can hold you back. Ego can destroy everything. Several of us think that we know a lot and do need any further knowledge. Remember, there is always something to learn in any topic. Learning more never hurts.

Genuine successful people are different. They tend to absorb everything good, like a sponge and never opt out due to their ego. We have seen several clients who think they are of upper class of society and have to eat like that. Unhealthy crappie foods may seem to be a lifestyle food but a bad food is bad.

Also sweating out in a commercial gym may not seem a good lifestyle to fit one’s ego. It is far from suited-booted corporate desk job. (The fitness craze nowadays are definitely changing the equation nowadays, though. Gym membership is in, already for many.)  Maybe you are wealthy, also you don’t want to be in a commercial gym for any reason. Fine, but nothing can hold back you from learning everything from scratch and setting up a home gym. Read my article on how to set up a home gym.

If you think you have to stick to your ego rather than health, you are destined to be doomed some day. Don’t get your ego get better of you causing a mental block that can harm your weight loss journey.

Lack of self confidence:

This is perhaps the commonest mental block that can stop your weight loss endeavor. If you are mentally weak and lack the self-confidence you are not going to make it.

All these strict diets and heavy exercises may seem too intimidating. It may seem like that even for the mentally tough ones. They know what to do, but tend to think again and again…

  • “I am a big foodie. I can’t follow a strict diet for long.”
  • “Too tough for me at this point of time, I need to prioritize my career now.”
  • “I should have started this before. It is too late for me now.”
  • “I am too old to join a gym now. I don’t want to hurt myself at an old age.”
  • “My lifestyle consists of spending max time outdoors. I can never follow proper diet or exercise.”
  • “I am a homely woman or spent wearing bookworm and not the gym bro type, those are not for me.”
  • “I have been eating sweets, sodas, ice creams, cookies and juices as well as other junk foods for all my life. I am addicted and can’t leave them.”

And so on…

Those above excuses are lame. If you do not have time, make time for this. It is all about having your priorities right. I have been a big foodie myself too and several foodies have changed their food habits like me. Read about me to know how I changed myself. As you start eating correctly, you will start loving healthy foods too. Besides, the exercises will give you the same pleasure and kick (far healthier choice, by the way!) than those shitty habits.

For older people, outdoor and indoor people too, proper exercise and diet is the only way to stay healthy and kicking till death. Exercise is the best way to fight ageing. Eat correct an maintain a correct lifestyle with regular medical checkup. There is no reason not to live several decades with energy and youthfulness.

Last but not the least, life is always a great leveler. If you are not doing it today, chances are that you may suffer later from any disease and may be forced to do it later. If you don’t take care of your body, I guarantee you the fact that your body will not take care of you later. Break the shackles of your mental block and start your weight loss and fitness journey today.

All the best…
