Indian Food That Contains Trans Fat

Trans-fat is a kind of fat that is partially hydrogenated. Do not confuse it with fully solid fats. They are liquid fats which are hydrogenated partially. Nowadays, the overweight and obesity rates are shooting up a lot due to the increase in consumption of trans-fat by individuals. Hence, in order to lose weight and stay fit one has to limit the consumption of trans-fat which is

present in certain foods. Following are certain foods that should be avoided and restricted as they contain high amounts of trans-fats.

1) CAKES AND PASTRIES

Many individuals especially college going girls have the habit of consuming pastries or cakes when depressed due to some kind of a stress like exam stress or during night out parties when they are quite happy. But did you know that cakes contain margarine which contains a very harmful kind of fat called as trans-fat? Well, just a single serving of a pastry can contain up to 3 grams of trans-fat which is quite hazardous and cause various heart related diseases by raising the bad cholesterol levels that is Very Low Density Lipoprotein (VLDL) and Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL). Consumption of trans-fat can indeed lower the level of good fats instead that is High Density Lipoprotein (LDL). Thus, do not forget to select healthier alternative of good fats instead like almonds and walnuts which are loaded with protein too. You can pop them in between your office meetings or have it during your mid-morning.

2) PROCESSED FOODS

Many processed foods like cookies and chips have trans-fats in them. Always remember to check the food label to check for these harmful fats. Many times when the trans-fat is below 0.5 it is listed as zero. Hence, be very careful while

over eating such stuff since many servings of a particular will just increase the trans-fat level to a great extent which is extremely harmful for one’s health. At times many advertisements claim that a particular biscuit is healthy or claim it

to be free of trans-fat. But there are ways to actually find out whether it is just a marketing mimic or whether it is true. If the ingredient list shows certain words like “partial hydrogenated oil” or the word “flaked” it definitely means that the product cannot be claimed as free from trans-fat. Hence, be very vigilant while purchasing foods from the supermarket or grocery store and make healthy choices since according to various research studies it has been observed that regular consumption of processed foods is linked to higher obesity rates and heart diseases like atherosclerosis and heart attack.

3) INDIAN FOODS THAT ARE REFRIED IN THE SAME OIL OVER AND OVER AGAIN

As a typical Indian mentality, people do not like to waste food. Individuals use the same leftover oil to fry items like pakoras, samosas, wadas which might increases the trans-fat level which is hazardous and may cause various health

problems. Hence, people at home as well as street vendors especially who reuse oils again and again must be made aware about the ill effects of heating oil again and again which can spoil the health of an individual. Also, it is preferable

to use oils like olive oil and canola oil which does not contain trans-fat rather than sunflower oil.
