IMPORTANCE OF GUT MICROBES FOR OUR WELL BEING

INTRODUCTION-

GUT  HEALTH  BEGINS AT  BIRTH:  Our  first  ‘inoculation’  of good gut bacteria  occurs as our eyes, nose,  lips and mouth slide through  our mother’s birth canal. This  transfer of flora plants the ‘seed’  for the initial colonies that begin to  populate the respiratory, urogenital, and gastrointestinal  tracts. More and more babies are being deprived of this initial  inoculation due to rising cesarean rates.

IMPORTANCE  OF GUT FLORA  IN ORDER TO PREVENT  DISEASES AND DISORDERS

There  is a summary  of the advantages  of gut flora in human  brain.

  • It  helps  to enhance  a healthy CNS  development of cognition  and child learning disorders.  But the use of antibiotics in  children influences the profile of  microbiota.
  • Several  studies have  now reported changes  in microbiota profile in  patients with Autism Spectrum  Disorder (ASD). The possible mechanisms  for gut-brain communication in autism suggest  that an altered metabolic phenotype in association  with microbiota dysbiosis contributes to ASD, pointing  to the importance of metabolomics in the study of how  microbiota may influence the brain.
  • It  takes  part in  case of neurodegenerative  diseases like Alzeimer’s Disease(AD),  Parkinson’s Disease(PD), Amyotropic Lateral  Sclerosis(ALS). These are all characterized by  clumped, misfolded bacterial proteins Amyloid and  inflammation in brain.
  • In  world  wide basis,  the number of  people with suffering  from both Diabetes (Specially  TypeII) and Obesity, are highly  associated with new way of efforts  to target the GBA to reverse these conditions.

DIETARY  GUIDELINES  ALONG WITH CLINICAL  ESTIMATION- Brain  sends signals  to the gut which  is why stress and other  emotions can contribute gastrointestinal  symptoms. According to UCLA’s study, the  implication of the work, the old saying “you  are what you eat” and “gut feeling” take on new  meaning.

So, based on research,  prebiotics and probiotics  intake is the only way to  sustain brain development in  order to stay “Mentally Healthy”.  High vegetable, sufficient carbohydrate,  high fiber rich diet should recommended.  And, in early days the sequence of this process  was determined by stool samples but in developed modern  science, mucosal samples from different parts of G.I tract  are collected to estimate the health status related to microbiota  on the well being of brain.

  • INCREASED  CONSUMPTION  OF CARBOHYDRATE-  Bacteria feed on sugar  particularly pathogenic bacteria.  Yeast also feeds on sugar and it  is beneficial in case of keeping balance  of microbial flora under ideal circumstances.
  • ALTERED  FATS IN FOOD  PRODUCTS- Fats are  necessary in producing  and maintaining cell walls.  Fat provide the barrier that  keep many toxins, pathogens, and  water soluble compounds from freely  crossing into the bloodstream. A diet  containing artificial or poor quality fats  leads to permeable cell walls and resulting difficulties  with allergies, toxicity and a chronic load on the immune  and brain system.

conclusion-  Neurologist  Daniel Piomelli,  University of California  recently highlighted the communication  pathways between the nervous system and  digestive system in an attempt to treat metabolic  disorder specifically. So, ‘HEAL  YOUR GUT,  HEAL YOUR BRAIN”  is  one of  the important  caption must be  listed for being HEALTHY-  PHYSICALLY, MENTALLY AND SOCIALLY.
