Should You Do Exercise During Periods?

Are you thinking to give a break in your exercise routine? If you are concerned how exercise will affect you in your periods then you are not ALONE !

There are many people who still thinks working during periods may harm their reproductive cycles and avoid workout for few days in a month. But there is really no reason to sacrifice your daily routines for this natural phenomena.

Benefits of exercising in your periods

According to Dr. Christopher Hollingsworth period is a hormonal game where both oestrogen and progesterone are at their lowest level which makes you feel tired and less energetic. But it does not mean that avoiding exercise will restore your energy level rather certain exercises will increase stamina, supplies oxygen to muscles and give energy shock.

Let’s venture few benefits of exercising when you are under hormonal game:

  1. Exercise actually boost your “Feel Good Hormone” and curb your mood swings and other PMS symptoms. The science is, exercise releases Endorphin which is a natural painkiller and give relief from all the pains. Besides, both endorphin and serotonin hormones signs up your mood and make you feel better.  So, “Put on Your Shoes” and burn few calories in gym or yoga classes.”
  2. Pain and discomfort often make you to spend sleepless nights in this period. Exercise relax your body and mind to give you a peaceful night sleep.  Practice some meditation or deep breathing exercise and gentle stretching cools down your nerves and give good sleep.
  3. Regular exercise flights your menstrual symptoms. Instead of taking any drugs or medicines for your discomfort like menstrual headaches, cramps,  and bloating exercise is the only solution. Intense exercise causes body to sweat and increase your demand to drink more fluids. More the regular you are in your lifestyle more you will feel comfortable in your period days. Hit your local gym for 30 min and go for functional training to boost up your Metabolic rate.
  4. Moderate exercise improves strength and power to curb all the discomfort in periods.

First few days of your cycles are little bit crucial if you are bleeding profusely. In these days start doing light exercises like gentle 30 mins of walking or doing light stretches etc.

  • Strength Training : Practice a low volume lifting to supply enough oxygen in your muscles.
  • Practice some light cardio to improve your endurance.
  • Yoga is the best way to relax your body and soul.

Plan your workout in such a way to balance all the exercise routine. Initial day start doing walking and light exercise with meditation and yoga. On 3rd day start taking light weight along with 15 mins of cardio.

Do not panic if you are due or in your menstrual time. Eat healthy, involve in moderate exercise and practice meditation. Menstrual cycle is just a regular process to be welcomed by every woman to lead a healthy lifestyle.
